Manchester United have confirmed the departure of manager Jose Mourinho after the club’s stuttering run of form led to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season. Jose Mourinho has left his position as Manchester United manager with immediate effect after more than two and half years in charge, the Premier League club has said. In a statement on Tuesday, it said: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Mourinho had been tasked with bringing back the glory days to the 20-time English champions after three lean years since Alex Ferguson’s retirement. But after more than two and a half years into his four-year contract, the club currently sit in sixth place, 19 points of league leaders Liverpool. The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ won the European Champions League with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2009.

He also won two domestic titles with Porto, three at Chelsea, two with Inter and one at Real Madrid.
